INTRODUCTION
The Westhaven Marina Users Association Inc was originally incorporated in May 1979 as the
Auckland Mooring and Marina Holders Association Inc. It was formed to….
- Promote the development of
adequate mooring,
marina and launching facilities for recreational boating in the
Auckland and Manukau Harbours and elsewhere....
- Promote the development of
all ancillary recreational facilities related to boating for the
benefit of the boating public…….
- Assist members in relation
to mooring, marina
and launching facilities in dealing with Water Front Auckland, local
authorities and Government Departments in relation thereto…
Since
then the Association has
been an organization that has sprung into action as an event or issue
has arisen. Some instances of this were the fees and charges proposed
to be charged marina holders in the seventies; the reconstruction and
relocating of marinas B to F in the nineties, and now, the proposed
developments of the western end of the Westhaven Marina for mixed
marine and residential use .
In
2002 a new committee was
elected and it has adopted a philosophy of continuous liaison and
communication with the Ports of Auckland as the best way to serve the
interests of members. It is considered that it is only in continual
communication that the Port company can be aware of the concerns and
issues of the membership. It is believed that issues that have caused
concern may well have been diffused had the Port company had the
opportunity to test the idea or proposal with a representative body
such as the Westhaven
Marina Users Association Inc.
The
Port company has accepted
that a "user group" is an acceptable way forward and has undertaken to
assist the Association be effective in the liaison and communication
process.
To be
truly effective the
Association needs to be representative, and it therefore needs all
marina and mooring holders to be members. It is proposed to meet
regularly during the year with Waterfront Auckland and to report to
members in newsletters during the year.
In
addition there will be an
annual meeting of members to elect the officers of the Association. At
any time the committee would welcome your thoughts and ideas. Please
write to us at P.O. Box 47 876, Ponsonby, Auckland 1144.
